143. Indo Sway

Today is a very special day - it is the 31st birthday of one of my best friends, Joseph Joey Sahabu aka Indo. I’ve tried to write this a few times now and I can’t seem to find the right words to dedicate this blog to him so please bare with me, as I completely free write for the first time in a long time…

8+ years ago… back in the DIP and Jubilasian days when promoters used flyers and white parties were cool. When $2.99 Steak and Eggs weren’t scary and we had the energy for Kenmore bowling til dawn. When Indo was a carless starving club promoter living on the Ave in a studio with an empty “ice box” and I was a 98lb bus taking innocent workaholic. Indo and I hung out for the first time…

He asked if I was hungry and proceeded to pull out a box of Twinkies and some Cristal?! Which I politely declined of course. That same day, he was quick to make fun of me for ordering a “Hot #12 no boba” and for wiping down the table @ Pochi before I sat down. This is where our adventure began. I started helping with flyers and hanging out at the clubs all the damn time. This is where I’d like to think that I became the subconscious angel on his shoulder from time to time telling him to go to sleep early and save his money. He on the other hand was more of the “you should enjoy life now” voice in my head. Convincing me that I had endless energy to stay out all night and still get to work on time in the morning. Hahah, such opposites.

When times got a little gray I remember thanking him later and telling him that I was blessed to have met someone with so much patience and compassion. I needed a lot of shoulders for support in the years that followed – Indo’s was always consistent and readily available. Even in the times where I wasn’t aware of it– he was always looking out for me. Good friends like Indo are few and far between… thus, I am blessed to still have him so near at heart, even with the miles that may separate us now. True friends don’t miss a beat and here we are still going strong.

So today on this very special day – I wish you, Indo, a fabulous birthday and a blessed year to follow. If I could - I would toast you in person with a bottle of Cristal in one hand and a #12 -hot taro no boba in the other! After I cleaned both surfaces with an antibacterial wipe of course…
