150. Explore. Dream. Discover

"Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things
you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore. Dream. Discover."

The fourth leg was the hardest part... the flight home.  I jumped on a plane and travelled the 1,100+ miles in 2hrs and 15mins back to reality.  On the way home I was completely exhausted but I was truly thankful for the experience.  I was gone from home for 55 hours and 24+ of it was spent traveling.  I touched 6 different states.  I did not consume any alcohol or gamble in Vegas (wtf?!).  I learned that I will never ride Greyhound again.  But I also learned that sometimes a little roadtrip can humble you and bring you back to where you need/want to be.

I found this adorable hand drawn map in my bag

It was so I didn't lose my way <3

149. Serendipitous Sway

ser·en·dip·i·ty   /ˌsɛrənˈdɪpɪti/ [ser-uhn-dip-i-tee]
1. an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident.
2. good fortune; luck: the serendipity of getting the first job she applied for.

I'd like to think that meeting JJ was a serendipitous event.  Thus the title of this entry...

Insert intro to JJ -  This is the mini portion where I get to divert from my trip and rave about my good friend JJ.  He's been mentioned a few times since Project Sway started.  Since first meeting him back in March - JJ has become a very close friend to me.  I would say he falls into the category of 'good peoples'.  He is always fair in his advice, easy to laugh with/at (it goes both ways), my bb yoda, giving, smart, hard working, my true stummy twin all day every day, an all around nice guy... he's single too ladies *ahem*  You'll see more of him on Project Sway, I promise.

3rd leg started out with a scenic drive through old dt Vegas and it's many side streets en route to the outlets.  Amazingly, I purchased nothing!  Quick stop off at the crib so I could scrub down and change and drool over some crazy 'Man vs Food' episodes.  Quickly we scrambled to Ichiza *nom* and had some mass good eats and great convo.  Suggested the honey toast *drools* to our neighbor table before we headed out to the Strip.  We trekked through Ceasers Palace to 'Serendipity 3' where JJ finally tried the Frozen Hot Chocolate goodness.  After dumping my humongo cup of coffee into the rest of the hot chocolate we had the best drink ever!  I had high hopes for spending a crazy night out stuffing my face and going nuts in Vegas.  But 3 cups of coffee later + the hot weather + the lack of sleep prior = slow and sleepy.  Thinking it was just a pit stop, we headed back to watch Sportscenter and ended up lounging til 4 while chit chatting and playing the "do you know" game.  Perfect way to spend the last part of leg 3.

148. Adventure Sway (legs 1 and 2)

So adventurous is not a way I would describe myself, nor would anyone that knows me.  That being said - I took a big step this past weekend and created my own mini summer adventure... I'm laughing myself as I write this because that is the best word to describe this trip.  I ended up dubbing the weekend "Utah/LV Planes, Buses, and Automobiles"

The first leg of the trip consisted of an 875 mile drive from Seattle, WA to Orem,UT to relocate my good friend Angel (see previous post).  We drove 15 hours in her packed Chevy Equinox along  the Old Oregon Trail (I-84).  From 7:30 am until 11:45 pm we only stopped once for food, twice for coffee, and 3 times for gas.  I saw tumbleweed, mountains, lighting storms, and forest fires in the distance.  It was a very tranquil drive, nothing too busy to but not very scenic hahaha.  The highlight of my drive brings out the nerd in me, as a child of the 80s, I LOVED playing the Oregon Trail... yes the black screen w/ green letters on the large floppy disks - dos version.  Anyway - once you get into Oregon on I-84, it becomes part of the actual Oregon Trail path.  I pulled over somewhere in Idaho to snap this pic.  Can you see the excitement on my face?  no really - I was super excited! hahaha

My second leg - which I really do regret but it was the BIG adventure part - consisted of a 7.25 hour Greyhound bus ride via I-15 for 387 miles from Orem, UT to Las Vegas, NV.  YES - I the germaphobe booked a Greyhound ticket.  NO ONE SAID ANYTHING until the day before I left about how sketch it really was.  I was going by what my east coast friends who swear by Greyhound and talk about how great it is... spacious, plugins, wifi etc... um yeah it's really different in Utah. I will spare most of the details but these:

My bus stop was at a 76 gas station and the bus was over an hour late but no one knew where it was.

I did have a lysol mini can with me and some antibacterial wipes when I boarded. yes - they were all gone when I got off the bus.

I didn't sleep because the guy in front of me was talking/yelling to the gal to my right and the guy behind me about how he thinks religion should be based on just killing the people you dislike and how he takes the Greyhound bc they don't check for weapons.

I stayed awake clutching my backpack with my hoodie zipped up and my hood on the entire ride - I was sweating like no other but I didn't actually touch the seat with any part of my body.

Needless to say, I did NOT use the bathroom on the bus or at any of the "stops".  The second we got into Las Vegas I ran to the Golden Nugget to wash my hands and use the restroom before I was scooped up by JJ and started the 3rd leg of my Adventure.

147. Angel Sway

I'm writing the verbiage of this blog as I look out at tumbleweed flying across I-84 in the middle of Idaho.  (Yeah Blackberry).  Idaho!?  you might ask - yes I am in Idaho and en route to Orem, Utah.  Only 5 more hours to go - maybe... we forgot there was an hour time change.  I'm helping my friend relocate to Utah for a new job...

So let me backtrack and introduce my travel partner - Angelique... aka Angel.  Angelique is one of my closest HAL friends... we've been sidekicks for a few years now.  Dating back to the stressful days of fighting for 2.4% commission and sneaking in an extra 15 minutes for our lunch runs.  We both scramble for parking spots, crave Starbucks, LOVE the New Kids, hot soccer players, and have a weird sense of humor and distain towards authoritative figures.  Random I know... but I think that's why we click so well.

We set out super early this morning in typical Myra and Angelique fashion… we stopped at Starbucks before we even got on the road. Hahahah and we’ve been listening to a plethora of New Kids on the Block music from past and present. Lots of libations within reach so we’re good to go. We haven’t spoken much about good byes or what she’s leaving behind… I don’t think I’m ready for that talk yet. As sad as I am to see her off on this new adventure – I am so very proud of her. This move is a huge step and I think it’s not only the right step for her but I think it will open so many doors to her future. So as I sit and look out the window at… seriously?!? more tumbleweeds and an eerie sunset I can’t help but hope the road to Orem lasts just a little longer so we can chat just a little more…

*To my good friend – I wish you nothing but the best because that is what you deserve. Congratulations on this next step. Whenever you want to come home there will be coffee waiting for you … on every corner with hot baristas waiting to serve you! R rated movies for you to watch and hopefully a New Kids concert for you to accompany me to! Hahahah *hugs*

Angel and I before we set out...

Such a cute sign :)
Her Fam posted it on the door when we got in at 11:30 at night...

145. Mother Teresa

Today marks what would have been Mother Teresa's 100th birthday.  Born Agnes Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, Mother Teresa was known as a humanitarian and advocate for the poor and helpless.  She was inspired at a very young age by stories of missionaires and their service to the less fortunate.

On 10 September 1946, Teresa experienced what she later described as "the call within the call" while traveling to the Loreto convent in Darjeeling from Calcutta for her annual retreat. "I was to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them. It was an order. To fail would have been to break the faith." (from Clucas, Joan Graff. (1988). Mother Teresa. New York. Chelsea House Publications, pp. 35. ISBN 1-55546-855-1).

I could go on and on listing facts and stories about Mother Teresa which led up to her beatification after her death... but I think that anyone/everyone that reads about her life and dedication to the less fortunate will find their own internal inspiration.

One of my favorite quotes by Mother Teresa reads: "Let no one ever come away from you, without coming away better and happier."

144. Enforcer Sway

Shout out to Niecey for gifting this little piece of creativeness to me a few Christmases ago.  Each one of her friends received a Kamibashi String Doll to match their own personality.  This could be a catch 22 for some but I think she hit me right on the money.  My bad ass "Enforcer" hangs from my rearview mirror and reminds me everyday to "fight the good fight".

Which Kamibashi String Doll are you?

143. Indo Sway

Today is a very special day - it is the 31st birthday of one of my best friends, Joseph Joey Sahabu aka Indo. I’ve tried to write this a few times now and I can’t seem to find the right words to dedicate this blog to him so please bare with me, as I completely free write for the first time in a long time…

8+ years ago… back in the DIP and Jubilasian days when promoters used flyers and white parties were cool. When $2.99 Steak and Eggs weren’t scary and we had the energy for Kenmore bowling til dawn. When Indo was a carless starving club promoter living on the Ave in a studio with an empty “ice box” and I was a 98lb bus taking innocent workaholic. Indo and I hung out for the first time…

He asked if I was hungry and proceeded to pull out a box of Twinkies and some Cristal?! Which I politely declined of course. That same day, he was quick to make fun of me for ordering a “Hot #12 no boba” and for wiping down the table @ Pochi before I sat down. This is where our adventure began. I started helping with flyers and hanging out at the clubs all the damn time. This is where I’d like to think that I became the subconscious angel on his shoulder from time to time telling him to go to sleep early and save his money. He on the other hand was more of the “you should enjoy life now” voice in my head. Convincing me that I had endless energy to stay out all night and still get to work on time in the morning. Hahah, such opposites.

When times got a little gray I remember thanking him later and telling him that I was blessed to have met someone with so much patience and compassion. I needed a lot of shoulders for support in the years that followed – Indo’s was always consistent and readily available. Even in the times where I wasn’t aware of it– he was always looking out for me. Good friends like Indo are few and far between… thus, I am blessed to still have him so near at heart, even with the miles that may separate us now. True friends don’t miss a beat and here we are still going strong.

So today on this very special day – I wish you, Indo, a fabulous birthday and a blessed year to follow. If I could - I would toast you in person with a bottle of Cristal in one hand and a #12 -hot taro no boba in the other! After I cleaned both surfaces with an antibacterial wipe of course…

141. Lazy Sway

I write this blog as I sit on my recliner with my feet up and a heavy blanket draped over me.

I have my PJs on (and they don't even match), my hair tied up, and my glasses slightly crooked on my face.

To my right is a cup of water with the ice completely melted and a tv tray with my tocino and egg breakfast remains to my left.  It is 3:14 in the afternoon...   and I'm inspired to enjoy the day as a reclined couch bum.

140. Bachelorette Sway

This weekend we celebrated the Bachelorette and Bachelor outings of the soon to be Mr. and Mrs. Sayamoungkhounm.  After MUCH planning on the bridesmaids part we were able to put together a beautiful outing for Wendy consisting of all of her favorite elements: BINGO, gifts, and food!  The night went off without a hitch and ended with massive amounts of laughs and finally the itis. The boys... don't want to know the details but it consisted of all of them coming back around 1am to wash there faces and hands, talk about Skittles, and eat the rest of our beautiful food set up...

The pictures were carefully chosen below...

Personalized Bingo Label for the dauper giveaways
The Groom and Bride all decked out in their outing gear
(I think Robert looks a little on the Amish side - *giggle*)
The BINGO set-up
The Afterparty Snack set-up
Bridesmaids- ready to go
The Groomsmen looking like a hot mess!
Stay tuned - in 16 days I'll have more pictures and memories to share!

"A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort."
- Herm Albright (still trying to find out who this guy is)

hahahah I had to post this because it's a perfect quote in my eyes.  I'm not the most positive person - I consider myself to be more of a "realist".  No rainbows and sugar coating here, which is good and bad pending the situation at hand.  I think that Helm Albright hit it right on the money with this quote.  So amused...

138. An ode to Louvre

One of the places in the world that I HAVE to visit is the world renowned Musee du Louvre aka the Louvre in Paris France.  Originally the home of past Kings and Rulers, this palace was transformed into a museum in 1793.  Since then it has housed some of the finest works of art in the world.  It is the current home of the Venus de Milo, Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, Vermeer's Astronomer,  and the newest addition is the The New Kingdom: Tutankhamun and his Successors

Earlier this year my friend Craig ventured over to Europe and I told him of my dream to see the Louvre at dawn and dusk... living vicariously through his trip he did me proud and took some amazing shots.  Including this "Diamond in the Rough" shot.  Still oozing with envy!

Another all time favorite picture of dawn at the Louvre...

137. O-Boom-A Sway

From: http://www.seattlepi.com/local/425231_flight17.html

Fighters scrambled after flight restriction violation during Obama visit; booms reported around region
Seattlepi.com reporters Aubrey Cohen, Casey McNerthney and Levi Pulkkinen contributed to this report

A pair of fighter jets scrambled after a small plane entered airspace restricted for President Barack Obama's visit to Seattle were responsible for sonic booms that shook windows Tuesday afternoon as far south as the Oregon border.

Described as a "real world mission," a spokeswoman for 142nd Fighter Wing of the Oregon Air National Guard in Portland said the jets were launched at 1:38 p.m. Tuesday while Obama was in Seattle.
Reached for comment by The Associated Press, one passenger aboard the Cessna 180 floatplane said she and the pilot didn't know anything was wrong until they landed and were told they had to talk to the Secret Service.

"Oh my God, I can't believe - is this the top news thing?" said Laura Joseph, a Normandy Park resident traveling from Lake Chelan.

The fighter jets were called in after the privately operated floatplane violated a temporary airspace restriction and landed at Kenmore. According to an Federal Aviation Administration notice published Saturday, planes were barred from travel below 18,000 feet within 30 miles of Boeing Field during the president's visit.

A pair of F-15 Eagles scrambled out of Portland International Airport flew at supersonic speeds north toward Boeing Field, where Air Force One waited for the president to finish the day's events in Seattle, said Allen Kenitzer, FAA spokesman for the Northwest region.

"A general aviation aircraft violated the temporary flight restriction around Seattle earlier this afternoon," the FAA spokesman said in a prepared statement. "The pilot of the Cessna 180 landed near Lake Washington. The FAA is investigating."

The fighter wing spokeswoman said the F-15s were armed, as is standard for the unit's alert fighters.
Obama arrived in Seattle shortly after 11 a.m., where he spoke during lunchtime round table with three small business owners at Grand Central Bakery in Pioneer Square before attending a fundraiser for Sen. Patty Murray.

Obama was accompanied by Murray and U.S. Commerce Secretary -- and former governor -- Gary Locke. The president departed shortly after 3:30 p.m.

During presidential visits, airspace surrounding the president is often subject to a "temporary flight restriction." The seaplane is believed to have violated that airspace restriction sometime before the 1:38 p.m. scramble.

The plane landed safely at a float plane harbor in Kenmore on the northern shores of Lake Washington, a worker at the harbor told KOMO/4 News.

Joseph, the passenger, told The AP that neither she nor the pilot, Lee Daily, knew about Obama's visit or the air restrictions that accompany such a high-profile trip.

The Secret Service interviewed Daily after he landed at the Kenmore Air marina on the north end of Lake Washington, which had been shut down for the duration of the presidential stop.

Joseph said she saw an F-15 outside the window as the plane approached Seattle.

"I saw a jet, just a white jet going by," she said. "I thought it was kind of odd to see a military jet."
The fighter only passed by the floatplane once and didn't take any other action, Joseph said.
Joseph said she and Daily were allowed to leave after being interviewed by the Secret Service and haven't heard anything yet about possible sanctions.

Todd Banks with Kenmore Air, who owns the harbor where the plane landed, told KOMO the float plane was a private Cessna 180J with a man and woman on board. He says a police car had already arrived at the scene.

Sonic booms were reported as far south as Southwest Washington, with residents in Chehalis and elsewhere reporting shaken windows.

In Pierce County, 911 lines were so jammed with calls about the sonic booms that they partially went down, Pierce County Sheriff's Office spokesman Ed Troyer said.

Calls from landlines were unable to get through for about 15 minutes, but other calls could still access emergency operators, he said.

Several homes and car alarms in Pierce County also were set off by the booms.

"We're asking people to stop calling 911," he said about 2:40 p.m., while dispatchers were still getting notifications -- nearly an hour after the sonic booms. "We're aware of what happened."

The source with ABC News says the Secret Service will interview the pilot out of an abundance of caution, but it seems to be a fairly routine matter and does not look to be anything sinister at this point.

134. Dancing Sway (Alex Wong)

Yet another SYTYCD piece that I went ballistic over.  My season 7 favorite Alex Wong tore up this Nappytabs hip hop routine w/ Twitch.  Many of you might think - eh big deal but Alex is a principle BALLET dancer from the Miami City Ballet Company.  This routine not only showed his amazing range as a dancer but his ability to embrace a new style and flex his technique.  The crowd when nuts after this routine as did I.

Unfortunately the next week after this routine aired, Alex suffered a horrible injury (snapped his right Achilles tendon - owwwwwwwwwww) and had to leave the show for recovery.  Clearly he was the judges favorite and he set an amazingly high bar for the rest of the male dancers to reach.  Bravo Alex - you were my favorite!

Video features numerous solos from Alex throughout the season
followed by Alex and Twitch's routine to "Get Outta our Mind" - Lil'Jon ft. LMFAO

133. Cousin Sway

I'm suddenly miss my cousin/aunt Charlene!
Charlene is one of my closest family members :)  She lives in Vancouver, BC so our correspondence is limited to random emails, FB, and the occasional call.  Living so close you're think we would get to see each other often... eh not so much.  The rare time we do see one another are hilarious.  Being so close in age we can relate to one another a little better in so many aspects.
Anyways - just a mini blurb for her as she's living it up in SF this weekend w/ the rest of the cuzzos.  I think this post just became more of a rant than an inspiration now... So freakin jealous she's there and I'm not...

hahaha the picture was the sway part - gotta love it!  We were watching our niece Bella get baptized last February.

129. Street Art Sway

In July we made a trek to Canadia - while walking down Robson we noticed a large group of people gathered on the sidewalk.  Naturally we were curious so... we walked in that direction.  To our surprise - we found a sidewalk chalk artist in full element*.  He wasn't speaking to anyone about his work or shooing anyone away.  He was diligently working on his hands and knees creating art on the cracked dirty concrete sidewalk.  What he created was simply amazing...

I tried to google the artist when I got home but using Toronto, Sing, and chalk art didn't get me very far... I did happen to find this little blirb about him... http://www.flickr.com/photos/zenimagery/3665948659/ which led me to this Xing Hua Tang.  So amazed at his humblness and his talent.  Looking forward to spotting him again one day..
*Element: when someone is in the zone (deep tunnel vision) doing what they love to do and shutting out their surroundings/distractions while doing it. ex: The DJ was in his element tonight making the crowd go insane.

128. Birthday Sway 3 - the Final One

Despite the ridiculous downpour in Seattle, I had a marvelous birthday. I slept in, watched tv in bed until 12; which is why I was late getting up... I attended a bridal shower, yes another wedding coming up, I had a wonderful family style dinner w/ friends, went home and had a few glasses of wine with CAKE and ice cream, learned to play Gin and ended the night in complete exhaustion with a smile on my face. Birthday Day = Success

The Day After. I woke up early to meet up with my fam and celebrate! Went to a new Dim Sum spot in the Wedgewood/Greenlake area called Bamboo Village. It was "ok". Had Kenji and I not been Dim Sum ordering experts I think we would have never been served! After catching up with the family, Kenji and I ventured down to UW to catch the Seahawks Open Training Camp @ Husky Stadium. Met up w/ some of the homies and hung out for a few hours. Afterwards we made group trip to Crawfish King for dinner. Nomage. THEN Kenji and I went to Pioneer Square and did the March to the Match. Ending the night watching the Sounders win with my best friend at my side.

I wanted to stop and say Thank You to every person that sent me a greeting of some sort yesterday. I actually did try and after a few hours I fell back asleep :) I am amazed at the outpouring of messages. Yeah everyone gets blown up on facebook - that's bc at midnight 400+ people are notified it's your birthday. However, I was overwhelmed and humbled by the text messages, phone calls, emails, and bbms I received. Friends of new and old, and those that were near and far :) Its a great feeling when you get those personal touchs.  So simple yet they mean the world.  Thank you everyone who made my weekend so amazing.  I'm so blessed :)

127. Birthday Sway 2

I usually make a huge hype and drag my birthday out for days and days on end... this year to be completely honest - I FORGOT.  Yes, I forgot my birthday.  I didn't realize it was coming up until about a week and a few days prior to it.  Which is rare bc I usually plan it out weeks in advance.  My apologies for the last minute scramble and awkward scheduling of events... I think working "on the fly" is not my forte but I tried...

The day before - I ended my usual Friday work madness and headed out to Citizen for a light and mellow HH with some fun coworkers.  Even my little brother stopped by to grab a bite.  I LOVE Citizen - it's become one of those "go to places" on my list.  Cheap drinks, good food, simple menu, awesome aesthetics, and good company.  *cheers*

Afterwards I trekked to Kirkland to meet up with the Friday Dinner Crew - amazing dinner as always.  We hit up BeachHouse Bar and Grill.  Watched the sunset, laugh my ass off, and grubbed down on some tasty smores NOM! Perfect pre-birthday celebrations.

126. Birthday Sway

Today is a very special day :)

It's extra special because I get to share the 'holiday' with my Daddy.  He is the random funny man - frugal,  green thumbed,  excitable,  hardworking,  music obsessed, trendy - that's my dad.  The rare people that have had the pleasure in meeting him, all have a story to tell; good funny ones that is.  That's why my dads the best! I stand by my claim - my father, my hero.

AND

My cousin Vincent; he's the cousin you call/bbm about the most random shit and gossip because you know you'll always get a straight response back.  You'll also get in trouble bc in a matter of days it's bound to come back to you via someone else (you now it's partly true!)  Nevertheless, Vince is still one of my fav cousins :)  You know you love that old school picture...

123. Red Paper Clip Sway

One afternoon my fellow blogger friend Charles (http://www.mmachronicles.com/) mentioned a blog that he was blown away by.  It was called The Red Paper Clip.  Uh?!  I know right... so I did a little googling and found it!

So the gist of the story is - some Canadian guy had a red paper clip and decided to trade it and see what he could come up with.  basically after a few trades he went from this red twisted piece of wire to a house!  INSANE! I know.

Its the proverbial lesson "one small step is all it takes".  Click the picture and read all about how this guy became a legend w/ a simple paper clip trade. Hm... I have a whole bottle of multicolored paper clips in various sizes... man, can you imagine the possibilities there?

121. Diverse Sway

On my way into work today I heard that the most diverse neighborhood was right here in the NW.  NICE!  After some googling I discovered this article - enjoy!

From King 5:  Seattle's 98118 zip code the most diverse in the country

by JOHN SHARIFY / KING 5 News

Updated Monday, Aug 2 at 6:02 PM

How do you measure pride? From 1 to 10, 10 being the highest, almost all of the people we talked to in Seattle’s 98118 zip code would assign the number 10 to the level of pride they feel about their neighborhood.

And what a neighborhood! There's no other like it in the country. You’ll find out why in a moment.

We’re talking about the Columbia City area and parts of Rainier Valley.

"When I started having a family, I moved up here," says Mama Dou from Senegal who owns a business in Columbia City. "It’s been great because it’s very diverse. I think there’s a lot of languages spoken here."

THINK? You better believe it! Try 59 languages. Minimum. That’s according to the 2000 U.S. Census.

The 2010 Census data is still being collected and counted. The last Census shows the 98118 zip code is the most diverse in the country.

See for yourself by watching our story and listening to the 8 languages we included in our story. Eight, if you count English.

The owner of Seattle’s Mawadda Café is from Iraq. Rami Al-Jebori doesn’t need surveys and studies to tell him what HE sees in his neighborhood every day.

"How people from all over could live together and live in one peaceful place," says Al-Jebori. The place is Southeast Seattle. His zip code is also 98118.
